Rent a latest-model Polaris ORV from Killgore Adventures to adventure out on the popular rides through the historic town of White Bird, Idaho, where you'll make a turn at the White Bird Battlefield. Here you can learn about the first battle between the Nez Perce Indians and the US Cavalry.
You can continue on from here through an old Cattle Ranch. It won't be long before you are surrounded by the beautiful pine trees and terrain of the Nez Perce National Forrest.
You'll follow scenic forest trails up to the entrance of the Gospel Wilderness Area. This is where you'll really start gaining some elevation fast and get to some of the most epic views that include a stunning high mountain lake called Upper Gospel Lake. You're not done climbing yet—you still have to make it to the end of the trail and Square Mountain Lookout.
You'll be at about 8,000 feet in elevation when you reach the lookout, a significant climb from the start of your ride, which was at 1,400 feet. This lookout was built in 1931. You can go inside and sign the guest book. From here, depending on how much time you have left, you can head back or explore side roads that might lead you to an old ghost town.
The old ghost town, Florence, was settled as a mining camp in the winter of 1862. This place was wild back in the day, an outlaw haven, and considered one of the roughest towns in the West. Walk through the Old Florence Cemetery and read tombstones. Be sure to bring sunscreen, bug spray, lunch, snacks, drinks, a camera, and layers to add and remove based on the season.
Don't worry if you forget something—you can pick it up at the Killgore Adventure Stop, where you will be able to check out your Polaris machine, purchase food, snacks, drinks, ice, and more.
