OVERVIEW

This unknown part of San Luis Obispo County is a true driver's delight on roads taking you back in time. Countless miles of scenic wilderness is home to a vast array of wildlife. The experience to and from this destination takes you through picturesque landscapes. The tour skirts a few local small towns and loops through the National Forest wilderness. Take this adventure through Pozo Valley for an unforgettable trip.

Journey through the rustic lands on a thrilling drive via backcountry roads. This adventure begins as you zig-zag the many rural roads alongside Paso Robles, Templeton, Atascadero and Santa Margarita. Heading southbound through vineyards, ranches and farms, you'll arrive at Calf Canyon Highway. We recommend stopping in Santa Margarita for a complimentary snack at Caliwala Market. From there, you will leave civilization and begin "The Road to Pozo."

Pozo is an unincorporated community along the historic Butterfield Overland Mail stagecoach route that operated from 1858 to 1861. Pozo means "well" or "hole" in Spanish. You will understand why it's called Pozo as you descend into the Pozo Valley. Visit the Pozo Saloon for lunch and take in the history of this legendary landmark. The saloon was established in 1858 and was primarily a watering hole for weary travelers.

The panoramic views in Pozo are incredible, as it is surrounded by the Garcia Wilderness and the Machesna Mountain Wilderness. This adventure route does not have your backtracking. Instead, you will experience the winding roads back to another small ranching community. Creston was founded in 1884 on the Rancho Huerhuero Mexican land grant. If you missed the opportunity for lunch at the Pozo Saloon, then be sure to stop in Creston.

The final portion of this tour will take you through the scenic back roads of Paso's eastern vineyards. As you navigate to the finish line, remembering where you have been, you can now say, "yeah, I've traveled The Road to Pozo."
