2022 Off Road Gear Guide

Ask trail riders about their recommendations for essential off road gear, and they’ll most likely rattle off a list of supplies needed in case of breaking down or getting stuck.

Luckily, guests riding at Polaris Adventures Outfitter locations can cross those items off their lists - no need for a jump starter or tire repair kit. Not only do Outfitters have top-of-the-line brand new Polaris off road vehicles every year, but they can see exactly where every rider is on the trail with Ride Command, a custom navigation and tracking app.

So, knowing getting stuck isn’t an issue, what are the best accessories and supplies to bring when gearing up for your off road adventure? Considering the weather, terrain, and length of time you’ll be offroading will help.

Outdoor Clothing

Appropriate offroad clothing can make the difference between clean and safe, or dirty and banged up. Polaris Adventure Outfitters will always supply your primary atv safety gear, like helmets and goggles.

Check the forecast and dress for the conditions. Regardless of weather, a long sleeve shirt is always best to protect yourself from a stray branch, flying sand, bugs, and the sun. If you’re really riding some rough terrain, a protective vest or riding jacket provide some extra cushion in case you take a tumble. Wearing layers or waterproof clothing is a good idea for cold or wet weather adventuring.

Cushioned ATV gloves are a must-have to protect against blisters from a tight grip on the steering wheel or handlebars. Speaking of extra cushion, wearing atv riding pants with abrasion resistant paneling instead of jeans can provide comfort on longer rides.

You’ll want boots with good traction to help keep your balance - waterproof if you’ll be doing some serious off road mudding. Finally, a riding bandana or gaiter can be pulled over your face to keep you from inhaling dirt or sand.

Off Road Gear

If camping becomes part of your adventure, which it often does at some “stay and play” outfitter locations, you’ll want to pull out your camping gear checklist. Here are some essentials.

  • Lantern or high powered flashlight

  • Backpack with raincover

  • Folding camping chairs

  • Tent

  • Sleeping bag with pad

  • Tarps

  • A pocket knife or multi-tool

  • Bottle opener

  • Lighter and/or matches in a waterproof bag

  • Bug spray

  • Bear spray, whistle

Travel Snacks

Don’t forget the snacks! Trail mix has that name for a reason - bring some along. Other easily packable foods include jerky, energy bars, fruit, nuts, cheese, and other non-perishable dried goods. You can never pack enough water. If tons of water is weighing you down, water purification pills and a water bottle or reservoir can come in handy.

For overnights on the trail, pack some cups or mugs, paper plates and eating utensils, and maybe even a cooler. Most Polaris off road vehicles have designated spots for coolers and other camping supplies.

Off Road Tech

While some of the coolest off road tech is in the Polaris vehicles themselves in the form of Ride Command, the ATV GPS tracker, some other items are helpful to stow away for your adventure. A portable power station is one of the best camping gadgets you’ll find to charge an electric grill, hot plate, coffee maker, or cell phone.

First Aid Kit Essentials

You’ll be happy you brought an off road first aid kit if you end up needing one. Bandaids and ointments protect scratches, but there are other items to include that might not be top of mind when packing, like:

  • Biodegradable soap

  • Toilet paper and/ or wipes in a sealable bag

  • Prescription medications

  • Hand sanitizer

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste

  • Sunblock

Other Off Road Accessories

Your adventure wouldn’t be complete without bringing along some fun stuff. Animals watchers and avid birders might want to bring binoculars and cameras. You can find all sorts of nature viewing guides for whatever area you’re exploring. Campers could pack cards or other games, books, and journals to capture the moment.

Polaris Adventures supports Tread Lightly!, a nonprofit organization that promotes responsible recreation through stewardship, education and communication. Protecting the environment by bringing along trash bags to leave no trace, and to collect any trash anyone else may have left behind, is a wonderful way to give back to nature.

All gear aside, when hitting the off road trails, don’t forget to be present in the moment and appreciate every minute. Gear up, and get riding!
