Riding an ATV or Side by Side on unpaved roads or trails, including sand, gravel, dirt, grass, mud, rocks, and other natural terrain.
Outfitters provide a suggested route, trail map, and list of sites/attractions to riders who want to adventure on their own.
Explore the Alpine Plateau this summer with Arrowhead Mountain Adventures. Expect to see some of the best views of the Colorado San Juan Mountain Range on what used to be a stagecoach trail to Lake City. This area features multiple old mining, logging, and stock drive trails that are perfect riding terrain for the Polaris RZR and GENERAL side-by-side rentals. This route can accommodate a two-hour, three-hour, half-day, or full-day rental's worth of riding. There's so much to explore—many guests opt for exploring even more of the alpine plateau with a multi-day rental.
Arrowhead Mountain Adventures is located at the trailhead next to Arrowhead Mountain Lodge for easy trail access. During your ride, be on the lookout for carvings on the Aspen Trees left by over a century of sheepherders, who are still active on the plateau in the summertime. Some of the carvings are dated— one is known to be dated as far back as 1917. As you continue on, you will ride up to the Big Blue Campground where will find the 'ranger station,' a homestead from 1917 that the Forrest Service has kept maintained in its original glory. Be on the lookout—this is a popular place for moose like to hang out!
Plan a stay at the lodge to fully immerse yourself in the plateau. The lodge is located only 20 minutes from some of the greatest attractions in southwest Colorado. This area of the state features the Black Canyon National Park, Blue Mesa Reservoir and Curecanti National Recreation area, Lake City, the city of Gunnison and the city of Montrose. Rent a Polaris side-by-side this summer to really explore deep into the great Alpine Plateau.
