Mountains, national parks, lakes, historic monuments—it’s all here in Wyoming. Best Time To Visit

Wyoming beckons off-roaders from late spring to early fall, and winter brings optimal snowmobiling conditions.

Climate

Enjoy 70- and 80-degree temps in the summer, with winter cooling down to the 20s. Wyoming’s most dependable weather trait? Wind!

Altitude

Wyoming isn’t considered a high-altitude state, even though its highest point is Gannett Peak at nearly 14,000 feet.

Terrain

Portions of the Great Plains and Rocky Mountains can be found in Wyoming along with the Intermontane Basins.

Wyoming Attractions

Yellowstone National Park

The nation’s first national park (established in 1872) is also first on everyone’s list for must-see Wyoming destinations. The park’s 2.2 million acres contain half the world’s active geysers, including Old Faithful. But don’t overlook Yellowstone’s many other offerings. Historic Fort Yellowstone and the Albright Visitor Center are two favorites.

Grand Teton National Park

Every season is spectacular in the Tetons, but autumn is especially stunning. The aspen trees turn a vibrant gold, and many animals start their winter migration, making for excellent wildlife sightings. Listen for the mating-season bugle call of elk and watch for moose, bison, and pronghorn as they follow ancestral paths eastward.

Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest

This 2.9 million-acre forest spans northern Colorado and eastern Wyoming, just an hour east of Cheyenne. Easy access to fishing, biking, hiking, camping, and off-roading make this heaven on earth for outdoor enthusiasts. Winter brings snowshoeing, skiing, and snowmobiling in endless backcountry.

Casper

Casper is in the heart of Wyoming, making it an ideal hub for a trip to the Cowboy State. Take in downtown’s vibrant arts, music, and restaurant scene, and spend an afternoon at the National Historic Trails Interpretive Center, commemorating early explorers, Native Americans, and travelers of the famed Oregon Trail.

Big Horn Mountains

Explore the road less traveled in the Big Horns. Three scenic byways traverse this extraordinary landscape filled with babbling brooks, fields of wild flowers, and deep canyons. (Tip: All those mountain switchbacks are especially fun in a Polaris Slingshot!)
