Visit Maine

As any Maine dweller or visitor knows, this beautiful, unspoiled state offers much more than lobsters and lighthouses. Its icons are many—a stunning coastline, four national parks, dozens of historic towns, endless sea-to-table restaurants, forested hills perfect for hiking, gorgeous winter getaways...the list goes on. A visit here literally means taking the road less traveled, since Maine is the least densely populated U.S. state east of the Mississippi River. If you proudly embrace your wanderlust or simply love the outdoors, you’ll be greatly rewarded by adding the Pine Tree State to your must-visit list.

Best Time To Visit

Maine’s coastline is best explored in the summer and early fall, but the inland areas offer outdoor enthusiasts loads of options year-round.

Climate

Weather is milder along the coast, including cooler summers with temps in the 70s. Winter can bring as much as 100 inches of snow to inland Maine.

Altitude

Maine’s topography gradually soars from sea level to 5,276 feet at the state’s highest point, Mount Katahdin.

Terrain

Three regions compose Maine: the Atlantic Ocean coastal lowland, the Central Uplands, and the Appalachian Mountains in the north.

Maine Attractions

Acadia National Park

Cadillac Mountain, located within Acadia National Park, is consistently ranked as one of the top attractions in Maine. As the highest point on the eastern seaboard, the summit offers unbeatable views of the surrounding coastal landscape. Driving to the summit requires a vehicle reservation, which can be purchased on recreation.gov. Even if you don’t make it to the top of Cadillac Mountain, a road trip to Acadia National Park will be unforgettable—especially if you’re driving a Polaris Slingshot, which can be rented for up to eight hours from 201 Powersports in Bingham, about 100 miles from the park’s entrance. Or choose a closer destination and incorporate some hiking into your day. Either way, you’ll be exploring Maine in style.

The Forks

Aptly named for being situated where the Kennebec and Dead Rivers meet, The Forks is loved by Maine residents for its endless outdoor activities. Whitewater rafting, kayaking, and hiking are popular summer activities, but in the winter, it’s all about snowmobiling. This is some of Maine’s premier snowmobiling territory, with hundreds of miles of well-marked trails making it easy to traverse the terrain. Being that outdoorsy will make you hungry, so be sure to check out the numerous nearby eateries and have a cozy bite to eat after your ride. Need to rent a snowmobile? Check out 201 Powersports. They can set up you and your crew for a few hours or multiple days of exploration.

Shin Pond Village

Mount Chase is a tiny town in the heart of Maine that richly rewards visitors seeking outdoor adventure. Located in the heart of the state, Mount Chase is quickly accessed from the I-95 corridor. Named for the nearby 2,440-foot Mount Chase (which many Appalachian Trail hikers access via a short side trail), the village attracts travelers seeking the ultimate immersion in Maine’s famed forests. Mount Chase is home to several lodges and camps that put visitors in the backyard of quintessential inland Maine terrain. For example, Shin Pond Village, a four-season resort situated on 100 private acres, can host your group for a few nights and also rent you ATVs, side by sides, and snowmobiles to help you explore whenever you visit.

Aroostook County

Aroostook County (or “The County” as it's known in these parts) in northern Maine gets you within shouting distance of the Canadian border. This region of Maine dials up everything that lovers of the great outdoors appreciate about the state. Endless woods, gently flowing rivers and streams, rolling potato fields, and even some military history—in the form of an abandoned WWII air force base—are ready to be explored by travelers wise enough to make the trek to The County. In Cross Lake, you can stock up on food and provisions at St. Peter’s Country Store, the hub of the community for nearly 125 years. Across the way, consider renting a Polaris off-road vehicle at Wilde Recreation to be able to explore the endless nooks and crannies of this nature lover’s heaven.

Wildcat Mountain Ski Area

If celebrating the best of Maine winters is on your agenda, it’s hard to beat Fryeburg, just across the border from New Hampshire. Wildcat Mountain Ski Area attracts skiers from throughout the region—and even Canada—thanks to its status as one of the most scenic mountains in the East. But don’t just embrace winter on the slopes. This area is also a snowmobiler’s paradise, where riders can explore the Jericho Mountains on groomed trails or go off on their own to shred fresh powder. Northeast Snowmobile & ATV Rental offers explore-on-your-own snowmobile rentals with plenty of up-front instruction and navigation assistance. You can ride for as little as two hours or go for it all day long—no matter what, your group is sure to have an unforgettable time!

Things to Do in Maine

Maine is a rugged and outdoorsy yet decidedly gorgeous New England state, famous for its enviable mix of craggy coastline, inland forests, and pristine lakes. Winter means snowmobiling, and the options here are truly endless. The same can be said for off-roading in the warmer months.
